Comprehensive 3D TV Guide - LG Nano 3D TV....
The LG Nano 3D TV range is the next step in the transformation of the Japanese manufacturers journey into passive 3D TV technology, and uses an LED display with an ultra high film across the screen which assists in the even distribution of light across the display. The LG Cinema 3D TV range has become so popular so quickly, competing fiercely with the active shutter 3D TVs produced by most other 3D TV manufacturers, that LG appear determined to use passive technology in as many of their models as possible. In fact the only remaining active shutter TVs left in LG's range after this next release will be the company's Plasma models, and even for these we could ultimately see the passive technology applied. LG are reportedly working on solving how to make passive glasses work with those plasma active models.

The arrival of passive 3D glasses in the LG 3D TVs has sparked huge debate in the 3D TV community over which technology is best. The LG Cinema 3D sets have clearly been very successful, mainly thanks to the cheap glasses ( around $10 a pair or free if you've picked up a pair from a cinema showing), plus the picture quality with much reduced flicker in images and absence of crosstalk. The only drawback seen so far has been that the sets work at half the resolution of active TVs - not particularly an issue with good quality 3D content buy may be apparent when watching  converted content or low quality video via 3D video on demand services.

This new LG Nano 3D TV range has been planned for some time, originally in active shutter format, but now the 60 inch and 55 inch models - the LW9500 and LW7700 - will be released using the FPR technology that's done so well over the last few months. Initial announcements on the 9500 and 7700 suggested that they would be THX 3D certified, but it's unclear whether the change to passive technology has any impact on that. Interestingly the current Cinema 3D TV models are not THX 3D certified. Other features of the LG Nano 3D TV models are not clear at the time of writing, though Smart TV capability is expected to be a given, as is a 480 Hz refresh rate. Reports suggest they are due to be released for sale some time in August 2011.
